Terbinafine hydrochloride is a broad-spectrum antifungal drug used in the dermatology . Developed by Swiss pharmaceutical company Novartis in the 1980s, it was first launched in the UK in 1991. In 1996, it was approved by the US FDA as an OTC drug and was launched in the United States the same year. Currently, it is sold in over 90 countries worldwide. It can specifically disrupt the late stage biodegradation of fungal sterols, selectively inhibit the activity of fungal squalene epoxidase, and hinder the squalene epoxidation reaction in the process of fungal cell chemical membrane formation, thereby achieving the effect of killing or inhibiting fungi. Suitable for treating skin candidiasis, such as tinea manus, tinea pedis, tinea cruris, tinea corporis, and tinea versicolor, it is also the best medication for treating gray nails. In 2000, terbinafine hydrochloride was included in the first batch of OTC catalogs published by the country. This product belongs to the antifungal class and has a strong effect on superficial fungal infections. Topical use can cure the vast majority of skin fungal diseases.
Function:
terbinafine hydrochloride works by inhibiting the production of ergosterol, a vital component of fungal cell membranes. By disrupting the synthesis of ergosterol, the medication weakens and ultimately kills the fungi, thereby eliminating the infection.
Application:
When applying terbinafine hydrochloride topically, it is important to follow the instructions provided by healthcare professionals and complete the full course of treatment, even if the symptoms improve. It is also crucial to maintain good hygiene practices and keep the affected areas clean and dry to enhance the effectiveness of the medication.
As with any medication, terbinafine hydrochloride may have potential side effects, such as skin irritation, itching, or a mild burning sensation at the application site. Serious adverse reactions are rare but can include liver problems, allergic reactions, and changes in taste or smell. It is advisable to consult a healthcare professional before using terbinafine hydrochloride, especially for individuals with pre-existing medical conditions or taking other medications.
