Estrone, also known as estrogen ketone, is a white crystalline powder, soluble in ethanol, insoluble in water. It is isolated from the urine of pregnant women or from the ovaries of livestock. It is the original hormone secreted by the ovaries of female animals and has been used clinically. It is an important pharmaceutical intermediate and can be used to synthesize derivatives of ethinyl estradiol or estradiol.
