It is one of the simplest aromatic alcohols and can be regarded as phenyl-substituted . Benzyl alcohol is a very useful fixative, and it is an indispensable spice in the preparation of jasmine, moonshine.

For the preparation of soap; daily cosmetic essence. However, benzyl alcohol can be slowly oxidizednaturally, and a part of it generates benzaldehyde and benzyl ether, so that the commercial products often have almond fragrance,
